Marion Island field huts

Marion Island is large if your only mode of transport are your legs! It's terrain, weather and consequently the challenging walking conditions mean that the meteorological (base) station alone cannot provide shelter for personnel that conduct research activities beyond a certain distance from there. To protect the sensitive ecosystem, camping at random is also discouraged. Therefore, to allow field personnel to conduct research in far-flung parts of the island, basic field huts have been stationed at strategic locations around the island.

These field huts have a unique and fascinating history and are also a central ingredient to the conservation and research successes achieved at Marion Island.
